Understanding Childhood Ear Infections

By Dr Zoe Braund ( Chiropractor )

Ear infections are common during childhood, particularly in younger children. They often occur following a viral upper respiratory infection and may cause ear pain, fever, irritability or temporary changes in hearing.

Because symptoms can vary, children with suspected ear infections should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause and whether medical treatment is required.

Some parents choose to include chiropractic care as part of their child's broader healthcare. A chiropractic consultation includes a discussion of the child's health history, current symptoms and an age-appropriate physical assessment.

If chiropractic care is considered appropriate, the chiropractor will explain the proposed care, expected process, potential benefits, limitations, risks and available alternatives before any treatment is provided.

Chiropractic care should not replace appropriate medical assessment or treatment for ear infections, particularly where symptoms are severe, persistent or accompanied by fever, discharge from the ear or significant pain.

Parents should seek prompt medical care if they are concerned about their child's symptoms or if symptoms worsen.
